Oncology nurses care for patients with various types of cancer and their duties include administrating cancer treatments and monitoring patients following a treatment. A career as an oncology nurse can be a rewarding one; however, one must be compassionate and patient. If an oncology nurse works in a hospital, the nurse may work 10-12 hour shifts at irregular hours. To be an oncology nurse, after a nurse becomes an RN the nurse will complete the requirements to become certified by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, or ONCC. The ONCC has several different certification options, including a general oncology nursing certificate and a certificate for pediatric oncology.
The job outlook for nurses will be excellent according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the average nurse working in the oncology department will earn $50,000 to $70,000 per year.
