Job Description
The role of the First Assistant (FA) for Robotic Surgery can be performed by a Physician Assistant (PA). The position requires a combination of nursing, medical, and administrative functions. The PA directly assists the surgeon by controlling bleeding, providing wound exposure, suturing and other surgical tasks. They may provide other advanced assistance, such as mobilization of tissue, patient positioning among other activities. They practice under the supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience. In order to perform those functions considered to be first assistant to the surgeon, the PA must adhere to standardized procedures. In addition, the first assistant must have acquired the necessary specific knowledge, skills and judgment to work in the perioperative setting. First Assistants may not perform the function of the scrub nurse while assisting. In addition, the robotic FA undertakes the responsibilities for clinical activities involving the robot which includes but is not limited to; resident education, assistance during robot surgeries, collaborate with SPD to ensure supply/equipment availability, collaborate with equipment technicians for robot maintenance and set up.
Required Qualifications
Able to apply principles of asepsis and infection
Ability to perform CPR
Ability to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiative appropriate preventative and This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience as first or second assist in surgery (at least one year of experience as PA
Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA
California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position
Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain
Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California and have evidence of transfer by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer
Must have completed an APA recognized graduate master’s degree program as a physician assistant
Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through the credentialing process by first clinical day
Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (APP) to be credentialed through OMAG to practice and be privileged through CIDP to function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites and affiliates. Credentialing, health plan enrollment, and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. Inability to comply with the requirements of OMAG/CIDP AT ALL TIMES will result in either, a LOA or suspension of privileges designation
