A physician who works as a cardiologist examines and treats disorders and diseases of the cardiovascular system including the heart. A cardiovascular surgeon performs surgery on patients including a heart transplant or a heart valve repair. To become a cardiologist, an individual must complete an undergraduate degree and medical school. In addition, a physician with an emphasis in cardiology must also complete a two to four year fellowship focused solely in cardiology. A physician working in the field of cardiology can expect to earn between $275,000 and $375,000 per year based on skill and geographical location. Surgeons earn the most in the cardiology field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, career opportunities in cardiology are expected to continue to be very good.
